Description
From the car park on Monreith Estate, retrace your route across the burn and turn right. Continue around the loch in a clockwise direction, passing the fishing platforms and the boathouse. Pass in front of the house and around the northern end of the loch. Follow the lochside path (which is narrow in places), and remember to look for the crannog as you approach the south end of the loch. Turn right on to the track and return to the car park. Monreith Estate is the seat of the Maxwell family, members of which include the artist and politician Sir Herbert Maxwell and the popular author and naturalist Gavin Maxwell. A fitting tribute to Gavin Maxwell is the handsome bronze otter memorial that occupies a commanding viewpoint over the beautiful Front and Back Bays near Monreith village.
