Awaken your senses this spring

Springtime in Dumfries & Galloway brings bluebell woods and swirling blossom, seabirds swooping , wild garlic scenting the air, whale and dolphin spotting, fields filled with new life and salmon leaping upstream. All these magnificent sights, smells and sounds as the region comes to life.

We've given you a few ideas to awaken your senses in Dumfries & Galloway.


Taste it
  • Take a trip to Castle Douglas Food Town for a great taste of locally produced food and an individual shopping experience.

  • Enjoy the taste of springtime, with some delicious ice cream from Cream o' Galloway, Gatehouse of Fleet or Drummuir Ices, Collin, near Dumfries

  • Visit Sulwath Brewery, Castle Douglas for a real ale experience, brewed on the premises.

  • Drop in to Scotland's most southerly distillery at Bladnoch near Wigtown for a wee dram.


  • Hear it
  • The Grey Mare's Tail, a huge rumbling 60m waterfall, tumbling from the waters of Loch Skene, near Moffat.

  • Listen to the sounds of Barnacle Geese that return from the Svalbard to stay until April at Caerlaverock WWT

  • Great music at the World Ceilidh, Knockengorroch, Carpshairn from 16 - 18 May 08


  • Touch it
  • Explore Galloway Forest Park, Britain's largest forest park, full of spring flora.

  • Dumfries & Galloway is steeped in history, why not discover the abbeys and castles where history was made?

  • On May bank holiday weekend, why not join our artists and craftmakers across the region as they open their studios for the 6th annual Spring Fling .

  • Be amazed by an impressive collection of gems, crystals and fossils at Creetown Gem Rock Museum.


  • See it
  • Take in the breathtaking scenery along our 200 miles of coastline with some fantastic walking routes

  • Don't miss the spectacular sight of Red Kites feeding at Bellymack Farm near Laurieston.

  • Your chance to see some rare wildlife at the Dumfries & Galloway Wildlife Festival from 21 March - 13 April 08.

  • Lie back and dream underneath our huge big skies featured in 2000 Acres of Sky, filmed at Port Logan in the west


  • Smell it
  • Walk through the mass of sweetly scented bluebells at Castramon Wood, Gatehouse of Fleet

  • Stroll round the square and enjoy the scent of the cherry blossom at Wigtown Book Town

  • Experience the aroma of gently smouldering whisky cask sawdust at Galloway Smokehouse, near Newton Stewart

  • Smell the freshly brewed coffee at Gallie Craig, a coffee house designed to blend into the Mull of Galloway landscape with a grass roof and built into cliffs.
