Museums & Visitor Centres

From gemmology to Formula One racing, social history to luxury foods; museums and visitor centres in Dumfries & Galloway cover a vast range of subjects.
Discover Dumfries & Galloway's past with museums in towns across the region, such as Moffat, Dumfries, Sanquhar, Dalbeattie, Creetown, Newton Stewart, Stranraer and the Stewartry Museum in Kirkcudbright. Or visit museums and exhibitions dedicated to specific topics and discover the origins of Scottish Christianity at Whithorn, the story of Kirkcudbright's artists' colony or the development of medical care at the Crichton Museum. See the collection of aircraft and aviation artefacts at the Aviation Museum, the first ever savings bank at Ruthwell, journey underground to leadmines at Wanlockhead and discover the story behind runaway brides at Gretna Green.
There are visitor centres dedicated to the people who have put Dumfries & Galloway on the map. The house where influential writer and historian Thomas Carlyle was born, the museum dedicated to founder member of the "Glasgow Boys" James Patterson, birthplace of "The Father of the American Navy" John Paul Jones and a large collection of racing memorabilia at the David Coulthard Museum and Pit Stop Diner. There's plenty to keep children amused, with attractions such as Creetown Gem Rock Museum, Shambellie House Museum of Costume, the Museum of Lead Mining and Cream o' Galloway particularly entertaining and stimulating for children of all ages. While there's plenty for adults to enjoy with trips to sample some of the region's most popular produce, Bladnoch Distillery, Sulwath Brewery and Marrbury Smokehouse.
