Broughton House & Garden
A visit to Japan in 1893/94 inspired Hornel, one of the 'Glasgow Boys' to develop part of Broughton House Garden in a Japanese style.
Low clipped box hedges give a formal structure to the rest of the garden. Within this formality grows a profusion of colourful herbaceous plants, trees and shrubs. Many of Hornel's plants still exist to be admired: the gnarled wisterias, magnificent hydrangea on the wall of the gallery, and a beautiful magnolia.
Hornel's interest in stone ornaments is evident through his collection of sundials, querns and troughs.
Towards the end of the garden is a small greenhouse with an interesting collection of vintage pelargoniums.
