Family Fun

The perfect place to make and re-live childhood memories of long summer holidays, Dumfries & Galloway has everything a modern family needs to enjoy adventure and fun. Parks, playing fields and wide open spaces will keep everyone happy and active, offering fun and relaxation in pleasant surroundings. There are golden sandy bays aplenty, pebble beaches and a coastline perfect for rock-pooling. Forests to explore, riverbanks to study and streams to splash in. With attractions and activities that stimulate, educate or simply exhaust children, indoors or out, whatever the weather, there's lots to investigate and create.

Beaches
With over 200 miles of coastline Dumfries & Galloway offers a huge selection of beaches, bays, coves and inlets for you to enjoy. From swathes of golden sand to pebble and rocky crags, popular sunbathing beaches to small, hidden coves. Craggy beaches are fun to explore with children, clamouring over rocks hunting sea life in rock pools and inlets.
Please bear in mind that the most easterly shores of the Solway Firth are swept by very fast tides so please take care. It is dangerous to walk out over long stretches of sand to meet incoming tides as you can easily be cut off.

Forests
Nowhere in the UK has more forests to explore and enjoy than Dumfries & Galloway! The Galloway Forest Park is Britain's largest, covering an amazing 300 square miles. Combining forest, ancient woodland, moorland and lochs, rising towards the rugged peaks of the Galloway Hills, the Galloway Forest Park is filled with interesting flora, fauna, bird and animal life. Try spotting red squirrels, wild goats and red deer, or even birds of prey like the rare red kite soaring in the skies above. With forest drives, walking, cycling and horseriding routes, the 7stanes mountain biking, artworks and picnic spots, the Galloway Forest Park has plenty to keep the family busy for as long as you want!

Animal Attractions
Children will love the open farms and animal parks, but it's not just native creatures they'll find in Dumfries & Galloway's animal attractions. Some of our visitor centres protect exotic species such as monkeys, wildcats, reptiles and butterflies. Friendly guides will help the young and young at heart learn all about the animals in their care, and if you are lucky you might be able to handle or feed some of the tamer species.
