Discover unexpected features amid beautiful horticulture as you enjoy the gardens of Dumfries & Galloway.
Spend the afternoon at Galloway House Gardens and explore the network of formal garden paths that lead you through the magnificent natural woodland around Galloway House. Take a relaxing walk through colourful wild flowers and spot many of the exotic cultivated species that benefit from the region’s mild climate.
Galloway House Gardens were created in 1740 by Lord Garlies, the elder son of the 6th Earl of Galloway, and are still maintained according to his original plans today. The informal pleasure gardens are set in 50 acres of parkland and were designed to complement the beautiful natural landscape of the region.
As you come to the end of the woodland you will find yourself standing on the shores of Wigtown Bay with breathtaking views across the Solway Firth. Enjoy the large, sandy beach at your leisure or for a longer walk follow the coastal path to see the stunning heights of Cruggleton Cliffs and the spectacular ruin of Cruggleton Castle.
Why not test your sense of direction at Dunskey Gardens as you try to navigate Dumfries & Galloway’s first hedge maze? Once you find your way out, look around the walled garden which houses a vast collection of unique plants, such as clianthus and sutherlandia - southern hemisphere plants that are forming the basis for a National Collection.
Visit the woodland garden and admire the pristine lawns at Dunskey Estate before indulging in some delicious treats at the cosy Scottish tearoom.
Bordering the stunning sandstone architecture of Crichton Business Park, Crichton University and Crichton Royal Hospital, the Crichton Grounds is a mature landscaped parkland extending to 100 acres. Home to a wide variety of unusual plants and trees, you can see azaleas, many specimen trees and unusual fungi varieties such as larch bolete suillus grevillei.
Highlights include a rock garden, ornamental pond and an impressive waterfall and Crichton Grounds is perfect for a gentle stroll or a relaxed picnic lunch whilst you soak up the serene surroundings.
