Castle Kennedy & Gardens

Looking across an ornamental lake covered in water lilies to the ivy clad ruins of Castle Kennedy in the Grounds of Lochinch Castle.

Explore 75 acres of outstanding natural beauty around the ruined Castle Kennedy. These lavish gardens were originally laid out in 1730 and are internationally renowned for their varied species of rhododendrons.

Described as “one of the showplaces of Galloway” the gardens are located in stunning scenery between two lochs, and extend to 75 acres of landscaped terraces, avenues and gardens. With the romantic ruins of 16th century Castle Kennedy at one end, and Lochinch Castle at the other, these famous gardens are well worth visiting. Originally designed in 1730 by the 2nd Earl of Stair who was Ambassador to France, and greatly influenced by Versailles, they are full of history as well as rare and exotic plants.

The gardens are a plants-lovers paradise and contain many champion trees (tallest or largest of their type), spectacular rhododendrons, magnolias and azaleas, a monkey puzzle avenue, a beautiful herbaceous walled garden and a 2 acre circular lily pond. Discover more with the guided walks, new bird hide, falconry displays, family fun activities and the summer open-air theatre.
