You are spoilt for choice when it comes to local produce in Dumfries & Galloway with wonderful creamy cheeses, game meats and seafood caught straight from the surrounding waters.

Get a real taste for the region with some tempting local flavours.

At Loch Arthur Creamery, cheese production has grown from humble beginnings - just two Jersey cows and two Ayrshire cows - to an extensive range of artisan cheeses and yoghurts. These organic, award-winning cheeses are handmade and can be purchased at the Farm Shop, which is bursting with an excellent selection of fruit, vegetables and freshly baked breads.

Galloway has a long history of cheese production and the Caledonian Cheese Company, based in Stranraer, is one of the UK’s leading producers of fine cheddar cheeses. Galloway Farmhouse Cheese is a slightly more unusual option since ewe’s milk from their flock of organic dairy Friesland sheep is used to create the hard and specialist Cairnsmore cheeses.

Fresh fish is available from various producers whether you are looking for shellfish such as Solway scallops, smoked fish or just a simple piece of haddock. Ferry Fish operate mobile shops throughout Dumfries & Galloway, selling everything from oily herring fillets to salmon and trout, there are also several smokehouses using traditional methods. Why not head out on the rivers or the open seas to catch your own dinner?

Gamey meats are also popular in Dumfries & Galloway and there are country houses such as Craigadam, which offer an extensive collection including organic lamb, wild venison and pheasant. The estate has access to shooting and stalking ground so that you can even book a trip to experience the thrill of the stalk. There are many local butchers selling fine meats and you can also taste many of the flavours of the region as you dine at restaurants.
