With an array of shops, cafés, hotels and restaurants, Castle Douglas offers a vibrant atmosphere where you can indulge yourself with speciality food.
Castle Douglas has been designated a Food Town since it boasts around 50 local businesses dedicated to selling or producing food and drink. An array of independent shops, cafés, hotels and restaurants adorn the streets here, giving the town a unique atmosphere and refreshing charm.
Indulge yourself with some speciality produce as you explore the tempting selection of goods, with everything from honey and preserves to local fruit, organic meats and fish. Thistle ‘B’ Scrumptious is just one example of a store offering a whole host of foodie delights, working closely with many Scottish producers to sell eggs, meat and cheeses, to name just a few.
Sweet treats and traditional home baking can be found at Irvings Homestyle Bakery, where you can sample the distinctive taste of shortbread, try the combination of sweet and savoury with cranberry and oat biscuits, or enjoy the Galloway fruit loaf. The Toffee Shop is another great place to enjoy a treat since it stocks creamy Glen Urr ice cream and sorbets. The milk and cream used to create the indulgent ice cream flavours comes from an award-winning herd of Ayrshire cattle, while wonderful fresh fruit is packed into the refreshing sorbets.
Quality Scottish meats can be purchased at local butchers such as Griersons - a family-run establishment. Find steak and haggis patties, a selection of burgers, poultry and game as well as homemade ready meals, ideal for those who fancy a break from the kitchen.
Dining out couldn’t be easier in Castle Douglas so why not sit back and relax in a local café or savour some fantastic cuisine at restaurants? You will receive a warm welcome wherever you choose to go and you can round things off with a pint of regional ale. Sulwath Brewers produce a great selection of lagers and beers, all made from natural ingredients.
