Spend some time in the great outdoors and enjoy a spot of fishing, a round of golf or take a walk around the beautiful Dumfries & Galloway countryside.
Discover some unusual sights as you take a memorable walk around the hills of Cairnhead. When you reach the top of the hills you’ll find a series of stunning red sandstone arches created by local artist Andy Goldsworthy.
The combination of the natural beauty of the glen and the man-made splendour of Goldsworthy’s sculptures is truly striking. The innovative Striding Arches project interprets and celebrates a little known area of Dumfries & Galloway, deep in the Southern Uplands.
In the heart of the glen you will find one of the arches springing from a disused building, the Byre. Sit and soak up the peaceful surroundings on the stone seating beside the Byre - intricately inscribed by letter carver Pip Hall. Explore the rest of the Cairnhead glen and see if you can uncover the fantastic collection of sculptures scattered throughout the area.
Why not spend a day casting your rod on the River Nith, one of Scotland’s most productive rivers for both salmon and sea trout? Enjoy the rich landscape and serene surroundings of the Nith estuary, a river that offers excellent sport for anglers of all abilities from beginners to the most experienced.
The character of the river varies from steep-sided wooded gorges and long glides in the upper river, through quick moving pools and rich fertile land further downstream. The flow is largely rain dependent and relies on the input from the series of tributaries but, given the correct conditions, there are few other rivers that can match the quality of the fishing.
Spend an afternoon on the green and enjoy a nice, leisurely game of golf on one of the courses from the Little Gems Trail, at the Gatehouse of Fleet course. The trail is ideal for those who are just beginning to play the game or those looking for a more relaxed round of golf with time to admire the beautiful views of Wigtown Bay and the Clints of Dromore.
The nine holes of the Gatehouse of Fleet course present a good test of golfing skill all year round and the setting ensures that your game will be memorable not only for the golf.
You can play many more fantastic golf courses in Dumfries & Galloway.
