Theatres

The Robert Burns Centre Film Theatre provides an alternative experience for movie lovers in the area, playing a major role in the cultural life of locals and visitors. A rich and diverse programme of movies are shown here with mainstream blockbuster movies being complemented by world cinema, foreign language, low-budget independent and short films with a number of documentaries, archive footage and animation releases.

The Ryan Centre Theatre in Stranraer offers year-round entertainment, with a selection of performances including concerts, choirs, dance, drama, jazz, musicals, opera and pop.

Built in 1792, the Theatre Royal in Dumfries is the oldest working theatre in Scotland. It is now owned by the Guild of Players who bought it in 1959, saving it from demolotion and allowing it to remain open, offering a variety of productions by the Guild and from visiting companies.

Arts centres and galleries

The Tolbooth Art Centre is based in the 17th century Tolbooth of Kirkcudbright. The former home of the town council, courts and prison, this venue now serves as a gallery for contemporary art and craft exhibitions. Visitors to the art centre can also find out more about the famous artists of Kirkcubright, such as E A Hornel, Jessie M King, E A Taylor and Charles Oppenheimer in the audio-visual shows, and see the original works of S J Peploe and David Gauld on permanent display.

The Gracefield Arts Centre in Dumfries is one of the region’s many art galleries. This venue houses a fabulous collection of over 400 Scottish paintings, alongside a changing programme of contemporary exhibitions featuring work by craftmakers and artists from Dumfries & Galloway, Scotland and around the world.

The Castle Douglas Art Gallery is an excellent venue, perfect for showcasing a varied programme of exhibitions of contemporary art and craft work. From fine art and craft to photography, the art gallery offers visitors an exciting experience each time they step through the doors.
