From the dramatic heights to the historical stories, the rugged Galloway Hills offer great walking among forests, lochs and moors.
The Galloway Hills takes in 24 peaks above 2,000 ft and among them are ranges such as the Rhins of Kells, the Minnigaff Hills, the Awful Hand and the Dungeon Hills. The Merrick, rising up above Loch Trool, is Dumfries & Galloway's highest hill at 2,765 ft and forms the 'forefinger of the Awful Hand range. The views from the top are superb and well worth the climb.
Make sure you are prepared for changeable conditions if you're heading out in the hills, but whatever the weather, walking here is challenging and rewarding. You'll find peace, tranquillity and solitude among this impressive landscape of rugged hills, still lochs and cascading burns and waterfalls. The natural rock features of the The Grey Man and Devil's Bowling Green are worth looking out for.
Many historic figures have sought the sanctuary of the hills before, such as Robert the Bruce, who fled the English Army after he murdered the Red Comyn and assumed the Scottish Crown. Bruce also won his first battle over the English in this area in 1307. There are monuments and cairns which commemorate these turbulent times throughout Galloway, such as the memorial stone to Bruce’s victory, above Loch Trool.
The town of Newton Stewart is the gateway of the area and a handy base for further explorations in the hills. There are many places to stay that belong to the Walkers are Welcome scheme, providing such benefits as early breakfasts and a place to put your muddy boots.
