a local guide points out the sights on a walking festival
Get active with one of Dumfries & Galloway’s walking festivals – one of the best ways to discover the region – and meet great people along the way.
Taking part in one of Dumfries & Galloway’s walking festivals is the perfect way to enjoy the region and meet many like-minded locals and visitors. Every walk has an experienced leader with historical, archaeological, geological and natural history knowledge ensuring they keep you on track and entertain you along the way.
The walks are suited to the full range of walking abilities so everyone can get out into the region’s beautiful countryside. The festivals have a variety of evening entertainment, so you can really make a weekend of it.
In May, WalkFest - the Newton Stewart Walking Festival - is now firmly established as the biggest walking festival in the south west of Scotland. In 2011 it featured 26 walks exploring Galloway's wild heart and undiscovered coast.
In June, the Langholm Walking Festival offers guided walks taking in the beautiful hills and valleys of Eskdale, along with evening entertainment. The Langholm area is characterised by beautiful river valleys between green, rounded hills commanding magnificent views.
Held in August, Dalbeattie Walking Festival celebrates its 5th year in 2012. Many of the walks on offer are not found in the local walks guides and provide the opportunity for people to explore places they would not normally get the chance to see.
In September, Moffat Ramblers' Walking Festival provides a range of walks from a gentle amble to strenuous hill walks over the stunning rolling hills of Upper Annandale.
Dumfries & Galloway Council’s Ranger Service runs a series of guided walks and events throughout the year. Several organisations, such as the Forestry Commission, the RSPB and Cree Valley Community Woodlands also offer guided walks.
