The Mystery of the Seven Stanes on the 7stanes
Can you solve the mystery of the seven stanes at the 7stanes? Go on a journey of discovery across all the 7stanes, collect the inscriptions from all the seven stanes and complete the puzzle. As a reward, you?ll receive a certificate and have a tree planted on your behalf in a designated south of Scotland forest.
Seven stone sculptures reflecting the myths and legends of southern Scotland have been installed across the 7stanes mountain bike centres. The huge eye catching works of art have been placed in prominent locations near cycling and walking paths.
By visiting each of the 7stanes and deciphering the clues inscribed on each of the 'stanes', the mystery of the sculptures will be unravelled.
The sculptures in Dumfries & Galloway are:
Kirroughtree, The Gem Stane. This trail is known as the 'hidden gem' and this pink quartz sculpture has taken its inspiration from this reputation and close proximity to the Creetown Gem Rock Museum.
Mabie, The Ghost Stane. Situated in the 'misty glade' - a beech wooded area with a small stream - this stane is made from white marble.
Ae, The Talking Head Stane. The head stane is made from a 1.5 ton glacial granite boulder and looks south towards Ae village and the Solway.
Dalbeattie, The Heart Cleft Stane. This mammoth piece of Dalbeattie granite is intended to symbolise the fact that the town was once the heart of the granite industry in the south of Scotland and exported stone all over the world.
Glentrool, The Giant Axe Head. This area is known for its stone age past and legends of Scottish and Irish giants throwing objects at each other. The Giant Axe Head closely resembles actual neolithic stone axes and has runic text inscribed onto its top surface.
