Explore miles and miles of the Solway Coast to find sandy, white beaches, perfect for a picnic or just a refreshing stroll on a quiet evening.

Soak up the stunning landscape, rays of sunshine and feeling of peace and tranquillity by taking a walk along one of Dumfries & Galloway’s beautiful beaches. With hundreds of miles of the Solway Coast threading along the south of this region, you’ll find plenty of spots for a sandy stroll or picnic.

Whether it’s sunny or not, head down to the nearest beach for a refreshing stroll and make sure you watch out for the variety of wildlife that can be seen around the shore. If the weather is nice, why not take advantage of the fantastic local produce and pack a picnic to enjoy as you gaze out across the sea?

A few miles south of the town of Dalbeattie is Sandyhill beach, a large stretch of shore which is perfect for sunbathing, picnics or even a spot of swimming just by the water’s edge. Over in the west of the region, Killantringan is a beautiful spot where you can take a steep path down to the stunning sandy beach. Gaze into the rock pools and look for starfish, before heading back up past the car park to admire Killantringan Lighthouse, built in 1900 by the nephew of Robert Louis Stevenson.

If you’re near the town of Annan, stop off at Powfoot beach or if you’re near Gatehouse of Fleet, you can go down to Mossyard beach, a small sandy spot with rocks on the north side of Fleet Bay. Children will love to paddle their toes in the sea and look out for the pretty seashells dotted along the shoreline.

South west of Kirkcudbright, you can stop at the flat beach of the Dhoon, which has a well laid out picnic area or visit Port Logan - a beautiful beach with fine, golden sand. Walk from the quay and bell tower at one end to the Victorian fish pond at the other.
